Hi Judy , I discovered you first through Farewell Aldebaran (which is amazing) and Rosebud. Then I got the reissues of your Elektra albums which sound like they were real fun to make especially the first one. I recently found a great songbook of yours called "Essays In Sound" from 64. Great comments from you to illustrate the songs. I must admit to being a bit disppointed with the CD reissue of Aldebaran as it seems to be a vinyl transcription. Are the masters available to present it in all its sonic glory ? By the way you may find it interesting that the village I live in (Airth) has a haunted castle and strangely a house built in the shape of a pineapple ! Pictures are on the net if you scan "Airth pineapple". Weird or what ! All the very best to you and Craig Ian Doran Airth , Falkirk

Judy: I feel like I've just joined a cult. Though I've never sent a fan letter before...I am compelled to convey my enthusiastic appreciation of your talent. I recently read an article about you in Discoveries Magazine. Being from your hometown of Chippewa Falls, and graduating from Mcdonell (1965), I felt a certain kinship. I went to the internet to do a bit of research. I was able to access some of your music and heard your voice for the first time. After listening to a few tunes .. I shouted.. Oh My God!! My wife yelled from another room and asked what all the clammering was about. I had her listen and told her that I had heard of you way back when. After somebody told me about a beatnik girl from town who had gone off to New York and became a folk singer or something like that. I thought...Oh ...Kumbaya...Michael Row The Boat and the like. Didn't give it much more thought . Boy! was I wrong! You are the real deal and beyond anything I had imagined. I feel betrayed by my own prejudice for not discovering you sooner. I just got 3 of your CD's and plan to get more soon. I've dabbled in playing music and was a DJ for many years. I feel I have a pretty good ear and am a popular music trivia geek. So, I know without a doubt that Cher has built her sound stealing alot of your style. Whether she has given credit, I don't know....Grace Slick too...along with Janis Joplin and of course, Miss Midler. Pardon my rambling.. but I can't remember when I've been so knocked out. Your husband Craig is the perfect backup for your singing. I hope you guys record a thousand more songs. I will buy them all and spread the gospel, so to speak. Those damn nuns never hipped me to you. I suppose you were to "out there" for them. Now if I can only get that Salvation Army Song out of my head. Keep on ,Judy. You far outshined anything I saw on the Grammy show last night. Your Newest #1 Fan, Tom Sumner

Hi Judy! Can't believe I found you. Your web page is AWESOME! I am a fan of yours from way back, in the 80's, when you wrote "Might As Well Have A Good Time" for Crosby Stills & Nash. (I love that song) Then I got into your own Elektra & Reprise days, and now I see what all the fuss is about. You are awesome.. Judy, I originally saw you at the Troubadore in the 60's and my friend Mike and I were in San Diego for your "return". You may remember us as we were the two in front-center. The show was great and it's good to see your music available again. I do have a favor, no biggie either way, but a friend of mine works for a company which is setting up an auction to raise money for cancer patients, esp. children. The money goes to "One Step At A Time" I think. If you would just send an autographed CD, I would gladly pay for the CD. Please let me know and i will send the cost of the CD and the address to send it to. Thanks, Lloyd

I've been for years a fan of Crosby, Stills & Nash and loved those Crosby/ Doerge songs, and "Might as well have a good time" (Masterpiece!!) too. So, I finally decided to get Craig Doerge's CD... i've been listening to it for about a week and I can't stop. What a wonderful disc! Features one of the best songs i've ever heard!!! Sure I'm getting other CDs of Judy in the future. Thanks for doing such a wonderful music and shareing it with us. And thanks for being so kind with fans too. Best wishes from Spain, Alvaro. Alvaro

Dear Judy Henske New release of "Aldebaran" in UK this month on Radioactive label CD. Is it authorised and legal? Have bought a copy. Hope you get your royalties. Fabulous, fabulous music!!! Have waited years for this on CD. Cannot understand why Collectors Choice Music didn't release it with "Rosebud". Is "Western Wisconsin" about your childhood in Chippewa Falls? Was there really a "carnival cowboy" and a "cousin Nancy"? Best wishes from the UK Jim Seal

I can not help but wonder if one of my other favorites, Nick Cave, is also into yr. material, as i hear about 20 parallels between your first album and much of his material! leitmotifs, or unintentional tributes' who can say. Anyhow i really only know the 1st elektra LP and now singing California, both are sooooooo good! I love you, judy, let me know if you ever head out east to perform, or whatever.THANKS!!!!

I have your albums in storage because i dont have room for them in an apartment so i havent heard you in years. Was so happy to be able to order you on CD. Can't wait till you come thru LA again. Dear Judy, I'm really excited about the new album, which I've just ordered. Yippee. Seeing you and hearing you sing when Saturday night meant Hootenanny on the TV when I was a teenager is one of my enduring and treasured memories. I've always loved your work. Like you, I've been around the block a few times. Nude dancer in New York, costume designer on and off Broadway, stylist, playwright. Somehow escaped AIDS when almost all my friends didn't. I usually describe myself as a tired old whore. Now, I've washed up in London for the past 13 years, where I continue to write and chair the theatre commitee for the Writers' Guild of Great Britain. To make a living, I do consulting in 'branding strategy, which may sound like hot iron rods and nervous cows, but is actually about creating personalities for brands. While my company is real little (just me and the dog), I work with companies like Drambuie and Dunhill. Now, i'm setting up my own website for my company, which is called Sassafras. I'm wondering if it might be possible to talk about leasing the rights to 'Sticky Sticky Gumdrop' to play as music on the site (since my dog is the 'New Business Director')? I have no experience at all this, although I have a contact at Warner Chappell who will answer questions for me (As a writer, I was in the BMI Musical Theatre Workshop in New York for years, and now work with Mercury Musical Development over here). Well, it's just a thought. You never know until you ask. if you like, I could send you a little booklet about the company -- and a picture of the dog. I'm off on holiday this afternoon and won't be back until Halloween. No matter what happens with this, please know that I hold your work in great fondness and it has given me enormous joy and fun through the whole of my adult life. Many thanks and all the best. I really look forward to getting the new album. David James

I first discovered your magic through the work of Andrew Vachss. From the first time I heard "High Flyin' Bird" I was hooked. "'Till The Real Thing Comes Along" is another one of my favourites. You are a phenomenal artist; one of the truly great women of the world. Any chance of you performing in Toronto, Ontario any time soon? You are spectacular. Thank you for doing what you do, and for doing it so well.

You were my favorite female in my last years of high school, 1963, 64. Then I joined the Navy and here I am on the net looking for Tim Buckley's "Buzzin' Fly", and I come across Jerry Yester and a picture of you, and read that Tom Waits was also produced by Jerry Yester. That pretty much completes the circle for me and my musical taste since high school; it seems I have great musical taste all my post pubesent life. I've still got a vinal "High Flying Bird" and whatever else you did in the '60s. Unfortunately, Judy, I'm a flag waving American right wing neocon according to the entertainment industry; I still love you and the irreverence I remember and I never liked blondes, always brunette tall girls; maybe we can both be libertarians and keep the dreams. "Just like a buzzin' fly, I came into your life." All the best, Dave Westphal

I got that Farewell Aldebaran-album as a birthday-gift about the time it was released and from then on i was a fan. At the time i was a musician myself and i was certainly not listening much to folksingers or anything of all that protest-hype.... But Farewell Aldebaran... It's sooo very special. That strong voice...the bittersweet harmonies... and rather flimsy arrangements..and at the same time very personal. At that time i did not knew anything about that folk-singing background of yours. -And honestly, i really didn't care much for folk-music then, but you made me listen up - you soulmate you. Too bad we didn't met!

You have a whole new generation of fans. I was listening to "Wade in the Water" while I cleaned my kitchen this morning and my 3 and 6 year old daughters came running in screaming "That's the Tikki Tikki lady!" I have officially promised them that we will try to make a trip to CA to hear you sing sometime soon. They even promised to be good for 3 whole days each way in the car if I would take them. I thought you'd be amused to know...and perhaps we'll actually get out to see you. We're just crazy enough to do it and I'd love to hear you perform live again. For those who couldn't get to the sold out San Francisco/MillValley shows (all four sold out)...they were extraordinary!! In four shows, Judy sang "High Flying Bird" once, "Hooka Tooka" twice, "Salvation army Song" twice, "Ace in the Hole" once, and EVERYTHING ELSE WAS NEW MATERIAL from the last two CD's or, even, unrecorded material. What other artist, said to be making a "comeback" would be that brave/sure of herself? Judy was hilarious, and heartbreaking....wild to see audience wiping away tears from laughing, then the same during a sad tune. "Cocktail World" back to back with "Western Wisconsin" is almost TOO MUCH. All of this with just the (brilliant) piano playing of Craig Doerge, not a full band. She needs to be recording a CD a month. We'll buy them all. May she continue for a whole OTHER career!! Will

Judy, I wanted to let you know what an impact you have had on my family. Your first album was one of my uncle's favorites all though college. Every weekend my dads family would get together and sing after much jubilation. "Hooka Tooka" and "Salvation Army Song" were two of their favorites. Most of my fathers family has since passed on and the memories of these nights of great food, drink and song are all we have left. My mom lives in San Diego and reconnected with your music. It has been really fun talking with my aunts and cousins about watching you perform in Santa Cruz and I copied your original cd for them all. It has brought us all back to the happy and nutty times we shared. My 3 kids like to sing "Hooka Tooka" quite loudly in Costco. I'm not sure if I should thank you for that or not....We get a few funny looks. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that your reemergence has made my family very happy. Kristen Peterman

When my late wife and I saw you here in the '60s we were stunned by your talent. It was love at first note! I loved the little comment you made about Dave Guard going to Austrailia to do something with or to sheep. Beautiful!!! After the show we met you briefly and then offered to take you band to the motel where you were staying. That was in the good old days when I had a 1953 Hudson Hornet and it had all the room for them and some to spare. All I can say at this point is you are a wonderful, talented and beautiful person. Your husband is so lucky. Love and God Bless, Bob Zirbel

Judy: The piece on muskie fishing was fantastic. I grew up in eastern Iowa in the 50s and 60s, and the annual fishing trip to far northern Minnesota for northerns, walleys, and small mouth was part of the experience. You are on the money about walleyes not fighting, and just dying, except that it applies to big walleyes as well. A very overrated fish. Keep up the good work in all areas. When are you appearing in Southern California? David Reeder david@reederlaw.com

Judy Henske is a tremendous song stylist, comedienne, and all around personality. This was a most special performance for a large crowd that really knew Judy, and appreciated her...and she so sincerely acknowledged the audience near the end of the show that it brought tears to me. But that was not the only time the tears came! I was laughing and crying to tears throughout the show, continuously. Mostly laughing. Judy's irreverence toward art and towards things 'social',(she lives in LA), her commentaries, and lyrics, were simply side-splitting to me. She is ONE SINGULAR gal, and her husband accompanies her with great humor, and skill, and sensitivity, on the piano, and also as a sort of straight man. Judy reminds me of Lucy and/or Bette Midler combined, and of all the great women of the theatre, an original to the core. The pathos and style with which she delivered her signature song HIGH FLYIN' BIRD, is not to be matched. I believe her second verse there differs from what our JS uses.... The same for some of her blues choices which were so deeply felt by her, particulary a woman's drinking song which tore my heart up...... Ray and I were standing near the back of a standing room only crowd. Seated near the stage were Bonnie Raitt and Maria Muldaur, who both got up to join Judy for the encore, of two sets of mostly all original songs of Judy's. This last being a little song the kids would sing outside the whorehouse when the cops has left the area....and the coast was clear!!!! This was a sing-along and Judy says very dryly, "now ya can feel just like a bunch a little kids outside of a whorehouse....." Ya just had to be there.....every moment was priceless. The One--The Only JUDY HENSKE! This review has been posted at: JeffersonstarshipSF.com (go to ADECK) and also at EMannStudio.com (go to EDECK)

You and your husband are a fantastic team---Ray and I are like that, too! i wrote to you one before from a different location, I think. I am a painter and i forund tour wonderfuully irreverent attitude to art completely refreshing and also gut bustingly FUNNY! OHHH your comments and lyrics were priceless. IF you want to see paintings go to EMannSTUDIO.com. YOU are a singular talent..... My husband has spoken of you since the early day and HIGH FLYING BIRD.... My note to the SF Chronicle: To: pink@sfchronicle.com THANKS for the article on Judy Henske. I used to drive up from Castle AFB, Merced, to catch her in SF clubs. That was in 1960-1963 or so. Then... silence. When I asked about her on my radio show, somehow she heard about it, and phoned in. She was gracious, funny and very hip. Glad to know she is back in action. I recommend her highly! Look at you go, Judy. Look at you go! The site looks great and so do you. Looking around and reading the great reviews of the new album (Yes. I still call them albums), I'm struck by the "Judy comes across as a gutsy broad" comment. I know lots of people see you that way, but what many don't see is the sweet and vulnerable side you rarely show. I've been remembering the day up at Jack's when you were writing material for your Live-in-the-Studio album. You and I were both starting to take off, careerwise (evidenced by the fact that His Majesty Jack Nitzsche was producing both of us). And we were both pretty much scared out of our wits. You were writing some comic patter to set off some of your songs and asking me every five minutes, "Do you think this is funny?" I recall thinking. Man, I guess it's okay to be unsure of myself and where this wild ride is taking me. Henske is. Anyway, not to embarrass you, just to say it's great to see both of us enduring. Survivors. Come visit me if you get the inclination. www.boblind.com. Great about your new stuff.

Hi Judy, I don't know if you remember me or not, but I was Kate's friend at Pasadena Christian School many eons ago. I lost touch with Kate after high school but never forgot about her. I've thought about her over the years and wondered what ever happened to her. She was such a beautiful person - both inside and out. So, thanks to the internet, I thought I would try to look her up and came across your website (great site by the way). So, I was wondering if you could at least let me know how Kate is doing and what she's up to and if possible, give me her email address. She was a lot of fun and a good friend back in those awkward days of junior high. I hope you are well and that life has been good for all of you. All the best, Monique

I love most of your albums. When are you going to re-release Farewell Aldebaran? Or is Yester the problem here? My personal bootleg CD I made for myself from some good recordings I had will have to do the trick I s'pose. Your records are a treasured part of my collection... but 'farewell'--missing... it's going for outrageous prices on e-bay, and I'd rather give you my money than some chump wheeler-dealer whose never listened to the thing. I guess you don't feel the same way about "horse on a stick"... I love it, though, and have my own cover of it. If you're ever in chi-town, we'll do a family jam. (of the musical kind) PS, I just saw Gang of Four at the metro, and their drummer is a huge fan of yours. Proving again, that your hipness permeates all genres. I wouldn't mind hearing your voice thru a vocoder again. Lata' John.

Dear Judy--I heard you singing (with Steve Brainderd sometimes, and sometimes solo) in Oklahoma City at a little coffee house called the Buddhi (sic, I think) in the summer of 1964. I thought you were unbelievably, breathtakingly good. I loved your singing, your presence, your humor, the gutsy raw earthiness you projected. I heard you quite a few times that summer and I always wondered what happened to you. This morning, for some reason, I put "Judy Henske" into Google and was delighted to find this site. We were nearly speechless with the power of your voice and the lyrics of that song. We would like to cover that song and I was wondering if you can point me in the direction of finding the actual lyrics. We're trying to copy them off the CD but I always worry we'll miss something crucial when we do that - or get a word wrong. I found your vocal styling to be truly captivating. My nephew showed me how to find your site again and am I happy. How hard could it have been? Judy Henske = www.judyhenske.com A cave man should have been able to have figure it out, but no Ludite like my self, sheesh. Soon as my wife give me my allowance I'll order up the CDs to replace the vinyl that got destroyed, and the new CDs as well. Great to see that we are both kicking instead of being kicked. Hope to see your work find its way into some film sound tracks. Mel

I was talking to my sister the other day on the phone. "Whatever happened to that woman, you know, who sang Baltimore Oriole." "Judy Henske? Ah the secret love of my young life. I dunno what happened to her. She must have dropped out of sight." I first heard Judy on an fm radio show hosted by Les Claypool in L.A. where I lived at the time. I bought the first two albums at Tectron Records on Fairfax I believe it was. They caught the ear of my sister, three years younger, and they were about the only one's in my collection she liked. Well through the magic of Google, it turns out Judy Henske not only did not drop out of sight, but that she is more beautiful than ever and even better still making music. I couldn't help but buy some cd's and send them to my sister who still lives in Long Beach. Won't she be surprised? Congrats Judy on your still thriving career and thank you for introducing me to the blues. I still have the vinyl but my turntable packed up a few years ago. Kindest regards from Canada.

A number of decades ago(ahem), the guys I grew up with wore the grooves out of your album and sang the Salvation Army Song at the tops of our lungs at the drop of a hat. I had wanted my daughter Kate to hear your stuff, but I hadn't been able to find my old LPs, of course. Then my birthday rolled around, and she was able to find reissued CDs of your first two. "Holy shit, holy shit" was all I could say for a couple of minutes. Then we put 'em on to play, and she said "Man, Cass Elliot ripped her off BIG time, didn't she?" "Yeah", sez me, "Judy pretty much invented the genre." We raised that girl right, anyway. Galen
